Welcome to YA Books Central's "Indie Superstars" column. This event will spotlight the best and brightest of the indie community.

You don’t want to miss out on these talented authors

This week we’re interviewing Olivia Wildenstein, author of "A Pack of Blood and Lies"

Welcome to YABC, Olivia!

Michelle Lynn:  If you were deserted on an island, which three people would you want to have with you? Why?
Criteria:
One fictional character from your book, one fictional character from any other book, and one famous person that is not a family member or friend.

Olivia Wildenstein:
One fictional character from your book - Ace from my LOST CLAN faerie series. He's the whole package: funny, considerate, charming, and lethal when need be. Oh...and he's incredibly handsome and can fly, so eye-candy and a savior all rolled into one. (Totally modeled him on my husband *clears throat*).
One fictional character from any other book - Lula from Janet Evanovich's STEPHANIE PLUM series. I haven't read that series in years, but Lula stuck with me because she's just the right amount of insane and comical, which would make her the perfect friend and sidekick.
One famous person that is not a family member or friend - I'd bring Calum Scott to serenade us with his gorgeous voice, and to provide Lula with some eye-candy of her own. Not sharing Ace.

Michelle: What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Olivia: Sticking to outlines. I write them...spend a long time doing that. Seriously, they're like ten-pages long. But after the third or fourth chapter, I veer off course. I've had so many reviewers tell me how they can never anticipate what happens in my stories. That's probably because I can't either. The only thing I know is where my stories need to end. Everything that happens in the middle, I leave up to my characters.

Michelle: If you had to give up snacks, drinks or music during the writing process, which would you find most difficult to say goodbye to?

Olivia: MUSIC! I create playlists for each one of my books, and then listen to them on repeat while I write. Music heightens sensations and emotions, which helps the flow of words and gives scenes their intensity. If you're on Spotify, you can find all of my playlists here --> me.

Michelle: Do you prefer audiobooks, physical books, or e-books? Why?

Olivia: I prefer e-books because I'm a mood reader, so when I decide I want to read a certain type of book, I want instant gratification, i.e. clicking on a button and getting the book in seconds. However, I always buy the hardcover edition of the books I've LOVED, and I spend so much time in my car taxiing my children around that I always have an audiobook cued up and ready to go the minute I've dropped the kiddies off.

Michelle: What is the funniest typo you’ve ever written? Or the one spelling mistake you make every time.

Olivia: It involves a bloody fight between sworn enemies and the word "jerked", which was meant, in that context, as "moved suddenly." Let's just say the resulting scene, which was supposed to be intense, turned out so awkward that my editor told me she had to momentarily stop reading in order to stop laughing.

Michelle: What's the strangest thing you have ever had to research for any your books?

Olivia: Original ways to murder someone and then hide the body so that it can NEVER be found! I warned my husband I was researching this in case he happened upon my browser history. Wouldn't have wanted him to fear for his own life. 😉 Hopefully, I'm not on some terror-watch list now...yikes.

Michelle: What's your favorite binge-worthy show we should be watching?

Olivia: Oh, man...there are so many great shows. I have a slight obsession with Friday Night Lights and Vampire Diaries (even though the later seasons of both shows weren't as good as the earlier ones).

Michelle: Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Olivia: When a book isn't holding my attention (I usually give it 20 to 50%), I usually stop reading it. One time, I was so disgusted with a book (it was this French sensation) that I abandoned the book in a public space--not a garbage, even though I most definitely eyed one.

Michelle: What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

Olivia: The indie community is fantastic and tight-knit. To name a few of my favorite sounding boards and fellow authors--Astrid ArditiSiobhan DavisKatie Hayoz, and Jessica Pierce. Astrid and Katie have read and dissected each one of my stories, and offered up their shoulders to cry on when the need arose (usually after a visit to Goodreads--readers sometimes forget authors aren't unfeeling typewriters). I don't know Siobhan or Jessica personally--only virtually--but they're both terrific writers. Where Siobhan has provided me with invaluable advice on marketing and drafting techniques, Jessica bolsters the writing community and has created this amazing review community, YABookStop. Other Indies I love and can't wait to meet someday: Raye WagnerAudrey Grey, Elise Kova, and Melanie Karsak. They are inspirations!

Michelle: What are you working on now?

Olivia: I'm working on two projects --> I'm wrapping up my newest Paranormal Romance series, THE BOULDER WOLVES. And I'm in the final stages of editing a YA Contemporary that used to be known as HARSHVILLE, think NASHVILLE for teens, but which the folks at Macmillan will be rechristening soon. I heard the title but have been sworn to silence. Want to hear it first? Make sure to sign up to my Newsletter.

Meet Olivia

USA TODAY bestselling author Olivia Wildenstein grew up in New York City, the daughter of a French father with a great sense of humor, and a Swedish mother whom she speaks to at least three times a day. She chose Brown University to complete her undergraduate studies and earned a bachelor’s in comparative literature. After designing jewelry for a few years, Wildenstein traded in her tools for a laptop computer and a very comfortable chair. This line of work made more sense, considering her college degree.

The primal rule of winning: don't fall in love with the contender.

Three months shy of her eighteenth birthday, Ness is forced to return to Colorado. Even though it's been six years, and the wolves of her all-male pack don't recognize her, she recognizes them. People who shun others because of their gender are hard to forget.

Especially Liam Kolane--son of Heath, the crudest and cruelest Alpha to have ruled the Boulder Pack. Liam is as handsome as he is infuriating, as kind as he is punishing, and he makes Ness's traitorous heart race, which isn't good. After all, he's a Kolane. Like father like son, right?

When Heath dies, Liam vies to become the new Alpha and no one dares challenge him.

Except Ness.

Thus begins a treacherous game.

The rules: winner takes all...including loser's life.
