Headspace: Uncovering YA Books

Recently I realized how much covers of YA books about mental health (issues) say about what the book is about. Most covers do – but these in particular. I picked out three books to explain why the cover is so special.

1.      Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone

As you can see, this cover is very minimalistic and also one of my favourite covers ever to have been made for a YA book. The backdrop is white, just plain white, and in front of that are three ripped of pieces of paper with the title written on them: Every Last Word. The story is about a girl, Samantha, who struggles at school and has OCD. Then she meets Caroline and is introduced to a secret poetry society. Hence the paper in front. What I really like is how much you can’t see on the cover, which is actually a very important theme in the story. There’s more than meets the eyes.

2.      Things We Know By Heart by Jessi Kirby

This is one of my favourite covers as well, because it compliments the title of the book so much. This book is called Thing We Know By heart and it’s about a girl who has to get back on her feet after her boyfriend dies in a tragic caraccident. While grieving, she tries to find closure in the people who received her boyfriend’s organs. The only one left to meet is the guy who received her boyfriend’s heart. As you can see, the cover features a orange/red backdrop with heart on the front. But in stead of just being hearts, you can see how the shape of a heart changes into a human heart. I don’t think I have to tell much more, but it was an impressive read!

3.      Paperweight – Meg Haston

I discussed this book last month but didn’t really point out how the cover work with the book. The cover features a hand behind held up in the air by wires. This is symbolic for the maincharacter, who’s taking into a treatment facility because she has anoirexia. The wires show how light she is – how underweight she might me. I love the serenity of the coler: it doesn’t give away anything of the intensity of the book.

Have you read any of these beautiful YA novels? Let me know!
