The Steep and Thorny Way
by Cat Winters
Release Date: March 8, 2016
About the Book
A thrilling reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Steep and Thorny Way tells the story of a murder most foul and the mighty power of love and acceptance in a state gone terribly rotten.
1920s Oregon is not a welcoming place for Hanalee Denney, the daughter of a white woman and an African-American man. She has almost no rights by law, and the Ku Klux Klan breeds fear and hatred in even Hanalee’s oldest friendships. Plus, her father, Hank Denney, died a year ago, hit by a drunk-driving teenager. Now her father’s killer is out of jail and back in town, and he claims that Hanalee’s father wasn’t killed by the accident at all but, instead, was poisoned by the doctor who looked after him—who happens to be Hanalee’s new stepfather.
The only way for Hanalee to get the answers she needs is to ask Hank himself, a “haint” wandering the roads at night.

The cover and synopsis sound amazing. I loved In the Shadow of Blackbirds, so I am excited to read Cat Winter’s newest book.
I love the Synopsis! and the cover is nice!
The cover does not stand out in the crowded field of acclaimed new releases in YA Fiction. That doesn’t matter to me at all because I’ve read some great reviews, and I wouldn’t want to miss anew riff on Hamlet — Shakespeare’s great plays can always be re-interpreted in exciting new ways it seems to me…this is a must-read for me this year! Thanks and cheers, Kara S
The cover is unique and different from many other YA books that have come available recently. I love it. I also love reimaginings and cannot wait to read this one.
The cover is simple but beautiful. I love the composition of it. The synopsis sounds amazing!!!
The cover is gorgeous and it sounds amazing! Super excited to read it!
The steep and thorny way sounds great ♡ and the cover is fantastic ♡ Thank you
I love the seriousness of the cover as well as the sepia tone. The synopsis makes me want to read this to find out who killed her father, so it’s well-written.
