Today we're excited to be part of the blog tour for Leila Howland's new book Hello, Sunshine.

Read on for a playlist, more about Leila, her book, and a giveaway!

1. City of Stars, from La La Land Soundtrack

https://youtu.be/GTWqwSNQCcg

When I saw La La Land, not only did I fall head over heals for both Ryan and Emma, I couldn’t believe how hard I related to the story. La La Land creates it’s own magical world, but it seemed like the characters in the movie were living parallel lives to those in Hello, Sunshine without ever crossing paths.

2. 26 by Paramore

https://youtu.be/8Ju7T4J1qbc

I can feel the struggle in this song, and it reminds me of Becca’s bittersweet relationship to her dreams. The line “Hold on to hope if you got it, and don’t let it go for nobody” says it all.

3. Party in the USA by Miley Cyrus

https://youtu.be/M11SvDtPBhA

Um, how can you NOT dance to this song? It’s just so much fun, and it’s all about being new to L.A. It captures the lightness and bubbliness of a new experience--and this book wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t have that lovely brightness that LA is known for. Pass the bubble gum, please! Put the top down. Becca knows she’s going to be okay!.

4. I Love LA by Randy Newman

https://youtu.be/KcADqxnQA_4

This is so vintage and cheesy and I love it! This video just kills me( all these outfits are now back in now! High waist jeans, check. Bold tropical prints? Check) I felt like this when I moved to LA. Look at those mountains! Look at those trees! The shout outs to the boulevards, the way he looks to the camera to pronounce his love for this wacky city at the end. I honestly still feel like this sometimes. (Also, that’s my freeway exit at 1:33!)

5. Fire on the Mountain by The Grateful Dead

https://youtu.be/YAhEi7W1ib0

This song feels like LA to me--it’s just so groovy! I imagine it playing at some point during the party in Hollywood Hills when Becca, Marisol and Raj find themselves among celebrities. Also it plays in my head during wildfire season, when I the distant smell of smoke hangs in the air.

6. Still Want to Know by RAC featuring Rivers Cuomo

https://youtu.be/1P7cuX6OAm4

No matter what people advise us about risky behavior (like moving to LA to be an actress), wanting to see for ourselves what the world holds if we take a big chance is such a human desire. No adult in her right mind would condone Becca’s decision, but she has to do it. She’s heard the statistics, but she still wants to know! Catchy tune.

7. Somebody that I Used to Know by Gotya

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY

I listened to this song to channel Becca’s frustration and hurt at the way her ex treats her. “You treat me like a stranger and it feels so rough.” OOPH. Been there.

8. Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvlTJrNJ5lA

I used to listen to this song on repeat when it seemed like there was an ocean between me and any sort of artistic success. It reminded me that nothing was going to stop me from pursuing my dream.

9. Magic by Olivia Newton-John

https://youtu.be/r7WPwH8Rd6g

When Becca and Marisol meet, it’s magic! Marisol is that bestfriend who sees in Becca what she can’t see for herself. She knows that together they can bring their dreams to life. I know that the songwriter probably didn’t intend this to be buddy song, but it works for me!

10. The Way You Make Me Feel by Michael Jackson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzZ_urpj4As

I chose this one for two reasons. 1) Becca has an audition in which she has to dance to this song. 2) Becca *really* likes the feeling that Raj is giving her and who she is when she’s around him. It makes me smile to think about how knocked off her feet she is! Is there any better feeling than believing that the lonely days are gone?

If the Movie La La Land was a Young Adult Novel Hello, Sunshine

by Leila Howland

Praise for Howland’s Nantucket Blue:
“When it comes to indulgent beach reading, sometimes it’s more fun to get pushed over by a wave than to stay safely on your towel.”
The New York Times

"Sand, secrets, Nantucket Reds, and romance. A fresh, feel-good debut."

The Boston Globe

With a relatable heroine, diverse cast of characters, and an aspirational story, in HELLO, SUNSHINE (Hyperion | On Sale July 11, 2017) the author of the Nantucket duology, Leila Howland, takes readers on a journey based on her own experience moving to a big city to pursue her dreams of acting. An ode to Los Angeles, this grounding, sarcastic, and relatable story chronicles one girl’s struggle to be brave while pursuing a dream, and makes for the perfect summer read.

Becca Harrington is a reject. After being rebuffed by every college on her list, she needs a fresh start, so she packs up everything and moves to LA, giving herself one year to land an acting gig. Unfortunately, after a few grueling months, LA is looking like the worst idea ever. Becca can’t land an agent, she's running out of cash, and her mom is hounding her to apply to more schools.

In an act of desperation, Becca and her friend Marisol start posting short videos online—with the help of their adorable filmmaker neighbor, Raj—and the videos catch the attention of a TV producer. Could this be her big break? Or will she have to move back home with nothing but some bad head shots and a monstrous credit-card bill?

Readers will love every page of HELLO, SUNSHINE, a funny, romantic, and aspirational novel about a girl who just wants to make it on her own.

A graduate of Georgetown University, LEILA HOWLAND spent five years acting in New York in everything from an MTV public service announcement for safe sex to a John Guare play at Lincoln Center, and was a proud company member of the award-winning Flea Theater in Tribeca. Currently, she is a school librarian in Los Angeles, where she lives with her family. Visit her online at leilahowland.com or on Twitter @leilahowland.

Summary

Catalog Copy:

Follow the exploits of Cricket Thompson as she explores the alluring island of Nantucket and faces the unexpected in this collection of Leila Howland's first two novels.
Nantucket Blue

For Cricket, a summer on Nantucket with her best friend Jules is a life-changing dream come true. That is, until Jules and her family suffer a devastating tragedy, and Jules becomes a stranger. And instead of lying on the beach working on her tan, Cricket is making beds and cleaning bathrooms to support herself in paradise. But it's the things she hadn't counted on—most of all, falling hard for someone who should be completely off-limits—that turn her dreams into an exhilarating, bittersweet reality.

Nantucket Red

Cricket is headed to Brown University in the fall, but to help pay for her living expenses, she returns to work on Nantucket for the summer, where she finds challenges she hadn’t anticipated. As her world opens up in new ways, Cricket questions the future she’s been working toward her whole life. With the pull of a love triangle complicating everything, she’ll have to learn that success isn’t just about reaching goals, but also about listening to what she’s been trying to ignore—her own heart.

Praise for Nantucket Blue

The New York Times

Excerpts

I looked up; he was so close. Our cheeks touched.

“You are just . . .” he said into my ear. My eyes closed, eyelashes like matches striking my cheeks, setting them on fire. He kissed me, long and sweet, on the mouth.

“Just what?” I asked when we came up for air, stunned, heart stomping like a parade, wrists aching from holding the oars.

He seemed unable to finish his sentence with words. He pulled the wet oars inside the boat, wrapped his arms around me and kissed me again.
