Now meet Max’s book, The Last Kids On Earth
The Simpsons meets The Walking Dead in this hilarious postapocalyptic graphic novel for middlegrade readers.
Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he’s armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores. But Jack alone is no match for the hoards of Zombies and Winged Wretches and Vine Thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as Blarg. So Jack builds a team: his dorky best friend, Quint; the reformed middle school bully, Dirk; Jack’s loyal pet monster, Rover; and Jack’s crush, June. With their help, Jack is going to slay Blarg, achieve the ultimate Feat of Apocalyptic Success, and be average no longer! Can he do it?
Told in a mixture of text and blackandwhite illustration, this is the perfect book for any kid who’s ever dreamed of starring in his or her own comic book or video game. And stay tuned for the sequel, coming in Summer 2016!
Sounds great, right?
TOP FIVE FAVORITE FICTIONAL WEAPONS:
When I began writing The Last Kids on Earth, I right away began thinking about weaponry. It’s the end of the world, there are giant monsters on the horizon, zombies around every corner – you have to protect yourself!
I gave my hero, Jack Sullivan, a little something I call The Louisville Slicer. Peep the pic.
When thinking about the gear I’d hand over to my hero, Jack Sullivan, I couldn’t help but noodle my favorite fictional weapons. Behold, my top five – all of which are, in one way or another, literary!
5. Attack on Titan’s 3DMG
Grappling hooks, man, grapping hooks – what’s cooler? 3DMG – short for Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear – is the equipment soldiers use to battle gargantuan monsters in Attack on Titan. It allows the heroes to zip, fly, and grapple all over the place.
Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear is cool in the Attack on Titan Manga – but it really comes to life in the anime, making for some of the coolest action scenes ever put on screen – and that’s not praise I hand out lightly.
The anime is currently up on Netflix, so… what are you waiting for??
4. Sting
It’s the magical Elvish dagger used first by Bilbo in The Hobbit and then by Frodo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy – and it’s awesome.
When dangerous Orcs are nearby, Sting’s blade glows blue. So basically, it’s a sword with it’s very own Spidey sense. And that’s why I love it! I’d no doubt be super terrible in an epic fight situation – so any weapon that’s going to alert me to danger ahead of time? Well, that’s a weapon I want by my side.
3. Oddjob’s Bowler Hat
Oddjob is maybe the most recognizable Bond villain – and his weapon of choice is certainly the most memorable: a razor‐edged bowler hat. Oddjob appears in both the novel Goldfinger and the film. The depictions are different, but both versions wield the same deadly headgear.
2. Wolverine’s Claws
Have comic books given us anything cooler than Logan’s retractable, razor sharp claws? There’s just something so cool about the ability to – SHINK! – have indestructible blades pop out of your hands whenever, wherever.
For killer Wolverine reading, nothing beats Barry Windsor‐Smith’s Wolverine: Weapon X.
1. The Lightsaber
I mean, come on – what other weapon would take the number one spot?
They call it “an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” But I mean, elegant, schmelegant – it’s a blazing hot energy sword! How many hours did I spend jumping around my room, making humming, swinging, fu‐shoo‐nnnnn sounds as a kid?
The collected paperback movie novelizations feature tons of classic, saber‐swinging action. Get reading.
We’d like to thank Max for sharing ALL about his favorite fictional weapons! And here is another BIG thanks for the following giveaway of The Last Kids On Earth!
