Introducing Wendy Higgins, YABC's Author of the Week!!

Wendy Higgins is the USA Today and NYT bestselling author of the Sweet Evil series from HarperTeen, the high fantasy duology The Great Hunt, and her independently published Irish fantasy, See Me. She is a former high school English teacher who now writes full time, and lives on the Eastern Shore of Virginia with her veterinarian husband, daughter, son, and doggie Rue. 
Wendy earned a bachelor's in Creative Writing from George Mason University and a master's in Curriculum and Instruction from Radford University. She is represented by Jill Corcoran of the Jill Corcoran Literary Agency.

YABC:   What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

"The Singing Bone" story from the Grimm Brothers' Tales. The first paragraph gave me such a haunting image of this kingdom, terrified, and those who would take advantage of the chaos to gain power, and those who would sacrifice everything to regain peace. Plus, I saw so many delicious romantic opportunities. I knew I had to write it!

 

 

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?

The novel. The publisher and I went back and forth throughout the entire process, trying to decide on a title. They had suggested The Great Pursuit and one other, and I had suggested The Great Untruth. They won, hahaha. And I'm certainly happy with it. HarperTeen knows what they are doing. 

 

 

YABC:   What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I don't know if "proud" is the right word, but there is a scene that made me positively giddy when I wrote it. It's a romance scene when feelings are finally revealed. It's not a scene with Aerity and Paxton. I don't want to say who's in the scene for spoiler reasons, but I'll tell you my beta readers screamed when they read it. Woohoo!

 

 

YABC:   What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2017?

ROAR by Cora Carmack! It's also a YA fantasy romance. I've already read it, but I can't wait for the rest of the world to read it too!

 

 

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

I'm about to start writing the third and final book in my Unknown trilogy, a NA/adult apocalyptic romance. It's been such a wild experience.

 

 

YABC:   Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Lord Lief Alvi has always been a pain in my butt. I've had a love-hate relationship with him since day one. I knew he would not be your typical romance hero. He was too realistic for that. I knew he'd make real mistakes and do his best to redeem himself. Some readers might be mad at me for Lord Alvi's behavior, but I had to stay true to his character, and he's just a naughty hottie.

 

 

YABC:   Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising! 100%! That's the fun part for me, where I can really bring the story to life and watch it bloom. The initial drafting is SO hard for me.

 

YABC:   What would you say is your superpower?

This is a funny question to me because on most days I feel subpar and inadequate, trying to be the best mom I can, the best writer I can, and take care of my house and blah, blah, blah. I'm so utterly normal, just trying to get by. As much as I'd like to be Wonder Woman, I can tell you that every aspect of my life is a little...crazy. But I love it. I really do.
