Introducing Veronica Rossi, YABC's Author of the Week!!
VERONICA ROSSI is a New York Times bestselling author of fiction for young adults, including the "Under the Never Sky" trilogy. She completed undergraduate studies at UCLA and then went on to study fine art at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. She lives in Northern California with her husband and two sons. When not writing, she enjoys reading, painting, and counting down the minutes until she can get back to making up stories about imaginary people.
A new fantasy adventure in the Riders series from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Under the Never Sky
When Daryn claimed she was seeing “visions” during her sophomore year of high school, no one believed the truth. She wasn’t losing her mind, she was gaining the Sight—the ability to see the future. If she just paid attention to the visions, they’d provide her with clues and show her how she could help people. Really help them. Daryn embraced her role as a Seeker. The work she did was important. She saved lives.
Sebastian was her first—and worst—mistake.
Since the moment she inadvertently sealed him in a dark dimension with Samrael—the last surviving demon in the Kindred—guilt has plagued her. Daryn knows Sebastian is alive and waiting for help. It’s up to her to rescue him. But now that she needs the Sight more than ever to guide her, the visions have stopped.
Daryn must rely on her instincts, her intelligence, and on blind faith to lead the riders who are counting on her in search of Sebastian. As they delve into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems and where Samrael is steadily amassing power, Daryn faces the ultimate test. Will she have to become evil to destroy evil? The very fate of humankind rests in the answer.
YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
SEEKER is the sequel to RIDERS, which released last year, so I knew I had to complete the journey for the characters. I had a general sense for the theme of the book, which is redemption. I would say that was my primary inspiration. Also, swoons. That always inspires me, too!
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
Gideon and Daryn, the two main characters who each get a point of view in the novel. I love them both. And I love them together. It’s a lot of love. I had so much fun writing them.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The title. I knew when I was writing the first book that this book would be titled after Daryn. She’s the SEEKER—and it’s primarily her story.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
You know, there are quite a lot in this book, but the last few scenes turned out better than I’d hoped. I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll spoil the fun for readers, but it’s a powerful, cathartic ending. At least I think so!
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
I think I already knew this, but I learned it in a deeper way with this book: you can’t control the process. You can’t think that, just because you’ve written five books, your sixth will be a piece of cake. Each one is different. Each one will challenge you. That’s been my experience.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love my cover! I actually just received the final comp, and it’s even more gorgeous in person! If I had to choose my favorite thing about it, it would be the stunning smoky title treatment. I’m obsessed with it.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2016?
I think I’m pretty much with everyone on this: THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2015?
ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr. That’s an adult fiction book. But my favorite YA was Neal Shusterman’s CHALLENGER DEEP.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
Can’t say yet, but I can tell you it’ll be a big change for me. I’m excited!
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
I am amazing at burning toast. Like, really good at it. And if I had to choose a superpower? I’d choose the ability to read in my sleep ☺
Thanks so much for having me!
