Introducing Lindsey Klingele, YABC's Author of the Week!!
Lindsey Klingele is the author of The Marked Girl. She has worked in the writers’ rooms of television shows such as ABC Family’s The Lying Game and Twisted. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and bigheaded pitbull.
Meet The Broken World!
The adventures of three teen royals and foster girl Liv, which began in The Marked Girl, conclude in this exciting sequel.
In the fantasy world of Caelum, Liv, Cedric, and Kat attempt to defeat an evil traitor and his army to save their families and the kingdom. Meanwhile, Liv’s best friend Shannon and Cedric’s frenemy Merek stick in LA to track down the Knights of Valere–who are technically the bad guys, but who might be the only ones who know how to fix Los Angeles. The city, thanks to the open portals between LA and Caelum, is breaking down: the sky is orange, gravity isn’t working right, and earthquakes shake the ground every few hours.
When the crew reunites in LA, it’s a race against time to restore the balance of magic between the two worlds.
Meet The Marked Girl!
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (Los Angeles)…
When Cedric, crowned prince of Caelum, and his fellow royal friends (including his betrothed, Kat) find themselves stranded in modern-day L.A. via a magical portal and an evil traitor named Malquin, all they want to do is get home to Caelum—soon. Then they meet Liv, a filmmaker foster girl who just wants to get out of the system and on with her life. As she and Cedric bond, they’ll discover that she’s more connected to his world than they ever could’ve imagined…and that finding home is no easy task…

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I always find beginnings easier than endings. So the thought of not just completing this sequel, but wrapping up Liv and Cedric’s story entirely, was daunting. But it was also exciting. I knew I wanted to come back to the core elements from THE MARKED GIRL – medieval teens in Los Angeles – to finish this story off in a fun way. I can’t get enough of the juxtapositions – castles and movie references, swordplay and film sets – so those were a big source of inspiration. But I was also inspired by the thought of having Liv and Cedric complete their journeys together.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The title came first. After THE MARKED GIRL was written and sold, I knew where I wanted the story to go next. I wanted the title of the sequel to reflect on the consequences of our characters’ actions in the first book, and to also hint at the main conflict in the sequel. Because Cedric and Liv went through these portals, both of their worlds are in jeopardy. So the sequel’s title -– THE BROKEN WORLD –- helped keep me on track for building the plot of the book.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
I don’t want to give too much away, but I had a ton of fun writing the climactic action scene. A lot of the scenes in the duology play with movie tropes, and I got to mix it up with one of my favorites –- a car chase.
YABC: Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?
It’s important to admit your mistakes, learn from them, and keep growing. It’s the only way to keep getting better as a writer. (And as a human.)
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
It’s beautiful! I could stare at that castle all day. But aside from that, I love the symmetry between the covers for THE MARKED GIRL and THE BROKEN WORLD. And I love how they just completely encapsulate some of the best elements of the story.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2016?
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo. It left me in awe.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
After THE BROKEN WORLD releases this August, I have one more stand-alone coming out with HarperTeen. It’s something completely different –- sci-fi and spooky –- and set in my home state of Michigan. It’s set to release summer 2018!
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
I’m really good at doing TV trivia and I know how to add cheese to pretty much any meal.
