Meet Before She Ignites!

Before
Mira Minkoba is the Hopebearer. Since the day she was born, she’s been told she’s special. Important. Perfect. She’s known across the Fallen Isles not just for her beauty, but for the Mira Treaty named after her, a peace agreement which united the seven islands against their enemies on the mainland.
But Mira has never felt as perfect as everyone says. She counts compulsively. She struggles with crippling anxiety. And she’s far too interested in dragons for a girl of her station.

After
Then Mira discovers an explosive secret that challenges everything she and the Treaty stand for. Betrayed by the very people she spent her life serving, Mira is sentenced to the Pit–the deadliest prison in the Fallen Isles. There, a cruel guard would do anything to discover the secret she would die to protect.
No longer beholden to those who betrayed her, Mira must learn to survive on her own and unearth the dark truths about the Fallen Isles–and herself–before her very world begins to collapse.
Jodi Meadows’s new Fallen Isles series blazes with endangered magic, slow-burn romance, and inner fire.

YABC:   What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Ideas come from several places, and this book was no exception. One piece of inspiration was a relationship between two people imprisoned, who couldn't see each other -- only talk and help each other through the hard times. I knew early on that they had very different backgrounds, but they also had more in common than they first believed.

The second piece of the original idea was dragons. I wanted to write about a girl who was an absolute nerd for dragons. As in, she knew all sorts of random dragon facts, wanted all her stuff to be dragon-related, and just loved dragons more than anything.

YABC:    Who is your favorite character in the book?

Probably Mira, the main character. She's such a passionate nerd when it comes to dragons, and I really connect with that. She's rather shameless about her love for dragons. But she also has pretty severe anxiety, which makes her overthink simple things, worry about things that may never happen, and count or make lists to make herself feel better. And in that way, she's a lot like me, too. (Although I buy boxes and notebooks.)

I've always seen Mira as incredibly strong. She lives through some pretty terrible things, with anxiety clawing at her the whole time, but she never lets go of what she thinks is right. She takes a lot of strength from her faith, and also her desire to help people.

YABC:    Which came first, the title or the novel?

Definitely the novel. Unless books appear with titles attached -- which is very rare for me -- titles usually take until the first draft is finished. Sometimes even the day before the cover designer starts putting the cover together and needs to know NOW or I won't get a cover at all.

With BEFORE SHE IGNITES, the title definitely came last. I had lots of terrible ideas, from Ceiling Water to Cookie Dough Cupcake.

YABC:   What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

There's a lot in this book that I'm really proud of, but one scene I think about a lot is at the end where she, ah, to go back to the title, "ignites." You'll know it when you see it.

And I don't know why that scene. I just had such a fun time writing it.

YABC:    What’s up next for you?

Well, there's a sequel coming, and a third book after that. They're all about Mira, her friends, and dragons.

And I also have two more books coming with Brodi Ashton and Cynthia Hand. My Plain Jane comes out Summer 2018, and My Calamity Jane is scheduled for Summer 2020.

YABC:   Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

Gosh, I really felt like this whole book was the most difficult and emotional. For some reason, as I was putting together the worldbuilding and plotting out the idea, I thought this book would be a whole lot easier. But it was not!

Can I say the whole book was the most difficult? Because that would be the truth.

YABC:   Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Once upon a time, I'd have said drafting. I loved that feel of creating something from nothing.

But now I think I'd say revising. There's no such thing as a perfect first draft, and revision is where the magic happens. It's where the story starts to make sense, where the characters become clear, and where the themes begin to resonate at last.

Drafting is special. I can't deny that. But after a lot of consideration, I think I definitely prefer revision these days.

YABC:   What would you say is your superpower?

Buying books I don't have time to read.
