Meet Beyond A Darkened Shore!

The ancient land of Éirinn is mired in war. Ciara, princess of Mide, has never known a time when Éirinn’s kingdoms were not battling for power, or Northmen were not plundering their shores.

The people of Mide have always been safe because of Ciara’s unearthly ability to control her enemies’ minds and actions. But lately a mysterious crow has been appearing to Ciara, whispering warnings of an even darker threat. Although her clansmen dismiss her visions as pagan nonsense, Ciara fears this coming evil will destroy not just Éirinn but the entire world.

Then the crow leads Ciara to Leif, a young Northman leader. Leif should be Ciara’s enemy, but when Ciara discovers that he, too, shares her prophetic visions, she knows he’s something more. Leif is mounting an impressive army, and with Ciara’s strength in battle, the two might have a chance to save their world.

With evil rising around them, they’ll do what it takes to defend the land they love...even if it means making the greatest sacrifice of all.

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

So many things came to together as inspiration for Beyond: my love for Ireland and Celtic mythology, watching episode after episode of Vikings and just being enthralled by the battles and how surprisingly important family life was to them. If any of you are anime fans, the creepy giants in the book were inspired by how absolutely disturbing and terrifying the Titans are in Attack on Titan.

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?

I usually say Ciara and Leif, but today I’m going to switch it up and say The Morrigan, because she’s dark and a little scary but also complicated. She was a lot of fun to write.

YABC:   Which came first, the title or the novel?

Most definitely the novel! It was originally titled From Blood and Ash, but I was asked to come up with a more unique title. Luckily, one of my author friends is basically a walking title generator, so she helped me come up with Beyond a Darkened Shore.

YABC:   What do you like most about the cover of the book?

The crow! But also how smoky and dark and ethereal it is. When I first laid eyes on it, I couldn’t believe how perfect it was for the story.

YABC:   What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2018?

I read an advanced copy of The Bird and the Blade by Megan Bannen, and I absolutely loved it—so I can’t wait for the finished copy. I’m also so excited for Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young, because, Vikings J.

YABC:   What was your favorite book in 2017?

Without a doubt, it was The Bear and the Nightingale. I actually read it twice. It was so beautiful and dark and had such a lovely Russian fairy-tale feel.

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

Through the White Wood will be coming out in Winter 2019, and it’s a YA historical fantasy set in medieval Russia. It’s like The Bear and the Nightingale meets Frostblood.

YABC:   Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Definitely revising because then at least I have something to work with! A lot of times, drafting feels like creating something from nothing, which can be seriously draining. I spend a lot of time drafting just wandering around my house or standing in the pantry, hoping to get some inspiration from eating chocolate. I eat a lot of chocolate while drafting.

I am literally crying tears of joy for Through the White Wood! I also loved The Bear and the Nightingale and have been desperate for more Russian folktale-like books. And Beyond a Darkened Shore has been on my tbr since I first saw it and read the synopsis. It sounds amazing and I'm predicting I'll have a new favorite/auto-buy author in Jessica Leake!

The cover of this novel is breathtaking, and I just knew I needed to read the synopsis. I loved the synopsis. I think it sounds so mysterious and enthralling. The cover really embodies the dark tone of the synopsis. The crow really stands out, and I love that the title was changed because Beyond a Darkened Shore sounds more ominous and better fits what I read from the synopsis!
