Meet A Poison Dark and Drowning!

In this seductive and explosive second book in the Kingdom on Fire series, Jessica Cluess delivers her signature mix of magic, passion, and teen warriors fighting for survival. Hand to fans of Victoria Aveyard, Sarah J. Maas, and Kiersten White.

Henrietta doesn’t need a prophecy to know that she’s in danger. She came to London to be named the chosen one, the first female sorcerer in centuries, the one who would defeat the Ancients. Instead, she discovered a city ruled by secrets. And the biggest secret of all: Henrietta is not the chosen one.

Still, she must play the role in order to keep herself and Rook, her best friend and childhood love, safe. But can she truly save him? The poison in Rook’s system is transforming him as he begins to master dark powers of his own. So when Henrietta finds a clue to the Ancients’ past that could turn the tide of the war, she persuades Blackwood, the mysterious Earl of Sorrow-Fell, to travel up the coast to seek out new weapons. And Magnus, the brave, reckless flirt who wants to win back her favor, is assigned to their mission. Together, they will face monsters, meet powerful new allies, and discover that some old wounds are still full of poison.

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Simply put, the need to know where Henrietta’s journey would take her. That’s one thing no one tells you about writing a series: a sequel doesn’t inspire you the same way a new project does. I find that in a continuing series, it’s love for the characters that spurs me on.

YABC:   Who is your favorite character in the book?

By default, it has to be Henrietta. The whole trilogy is her personal journey, in a way, and she hits some of her highest highs—and lowest lows—in APDAD. However, I loved writing the new character of Maria. She’s a bold, brave, and entirely down to earth girl, which I love. I enjoyed writing her friendship with Henrietta. Also, I love Magnus and Mickelmas, because I love writing comic relief.

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The title! When we agreed on A Shadow Bright and Burning as the first book’s title, we quickly decided on how the other two would go: A Something Something and Something. I’m extremely excited about the third one, incidentally. It’s epic.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love that we’re continuing to do horrific things to beautiful flowers. In book one it was burning, in APDAD it’s drowning beneath poisonous goo. I hope to continue this tradition with book three. (In fact, I know we will.)

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2017-2018?

I’ve got a list! An Enchantment of Ravens, The Speaker, Hullmetal Girls, Chainbreaker, Obsidio, Lost Crow Conspiracy, The Gilded Wolves, the sequel to Caraval. Really, it’s an endless list.

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

I’m editing the third and final book in the Kingdom on Fire series. After that, I know what I want my next project to be, but I have to be secretive about it since it hasn’t sold yet. However, I can tell you it’s YA fantasy and set in a secondary world.

YABC:   Is there anything that you would like to add?

17+2+5=24

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising, definitely. I find I’m most creative when I have something to work against. I like solving problems, I guess.

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

I enjoy getting up early. I think the world’s beautiful at six AM. No one understands me. I am alone.
