Meet Once A King!
Aodren: A lonely, young king, searching for a way to dismantle his father’s dark legacy.
Lirra: A girl with the power to control the wind, torn between duty and following her dreams
For twenty years, Channelers—women with a magical ability—have been persecuted in Malam by those without magic. Now King Aodren wants to end the bloody divide and unite his kingdom. But decades of hatred can’t be overcome by issuing decrees, and rumors of a deadly Channeler-made substance are only fueling people’s fears. Lirra has every reason to distrust Aodren. Yet when he asks for help to discover the truth behind the rumors, she can’t say no. With Lirra by his side, Aodren sees a way forward for his people. But can he rewrite the mistakes of the past before his enemies destroy the world he’s working so hard to rebuild?

YABC: What gave you the inspiration to write this book?
I hadn't originally planned on writing this book. But after finishing Ever The Brave , I was surprised to discover that Aodren's personality shined. I didn't have to force myself to sit down and write when it came to Aodren's perspective. Anytime my fingers were at the keyboard, Aodren's character took a life of it's own. So when I finished the book, I didn't want his story to be over. I started asking myself, what would happen next? That's how I came up with Once A King.
YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
This is almost a tie! I love Aodren. While writing Ever The Brave his character surprised me. He had so much charm and personality. I think he continues to show his charming side in Once A King, but the character that truly stands out is Lirra! She's not the most beautiful. She's not the most talented. But she is loyal, clever, funny, and resourceful. Those traits are important to have and Lirra has them in spades.
YABC: Which came first, the title or the novel?
The title! This is actually how I write a lot of my novels. I will come up with the characters, the problems they face, and the opposition preventing them from reaching their goal. Then, I'll imagine a pivotal scene. Usually, that scene inspires the title. Once I have the title and the character names in place, then I can write the novel.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
There is a character in the book that I didn't like much at first. But while writing the book, I got to know the character better. And with each revision, he became a real person in my mind. So after something devastating happens, there is a scene that shows the emotional reaction of the people who know the character best. I couldn't write that scene without my heart aching. When I think of the novel, that scene always comes to mind.
YABC: What do you like most about the cover of the book?
I love the silver foiled words! I'm a font enthusiast. I could play around with different fonts forever. I was thrilled that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt used the same font artist for Once A King as the first two books in the Clash of Kingdoms series.
YABC: What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?
I'm dying to get my hands on The Blood Spell by CJ Redwine and Warrior of the Wild by Tricia Levenseller.
YABC: What was your favorite book in 2018?
I can't pick just one. Literally, there are too many to choose from. I loved Legendary by Stephanie Garber, Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young, and The Storyteller by Traci Chee. But honestly, I could go on and on...those are just sitting on my desk right now.
YABC: What’s up next for you?
I'm working on a few exciting projects! I'm drafting an historical island inspired fantasy. I've written a picture book. And I'm in the process of attending VCFA - Vermont College of Fine Arts - to earn a MFA in Writing Fiction for Children and Young Adults.
YABC: What would you say is your superpower?
It's my ability to consume mass amounts of Hot Tamales and Coke Zero while writing. Literally, the path to writing Once A King was laid in Hot Tamales. The drink-candy combination is exactly what I need to get my writing juices flowing!
