Introducing Christine Lynn Herman, YABC's Author of the Week!!

Christine Lynn Herman writes books about magic, monsters, and growing up. She is the author of THE DEVOURING GRAY (April 2, 2019/Disney-Hyperion) and a sequel (2020). Meet The Devouring Gray!
 
 
After the death of her sister, seventeen-year-old Violet Saunders finds herself dragged to Four Paths, New York. Violet may be a newcomer, but she soon learns her mother isn't: They belong to one of the revered founding families of the town, where stone bells hang above every doorway and danger lurks in the depths of the woods.
 
Justin Hawthorne's bloodline has protected Four Paths for generations from the Gray-a lifeless dimension that imprisons a brutal monster. After Justin fails to inherit his family's powers, his mother is determined to keep this humiliation a secret. But Justin can't let go of the future he was promised and the town he swore to protect.
 
Ever since Harper Carlisle lost her hand to an accident that left her stranded in the Gray for days, she has vowed revenge on the person who abandoned her: Justin Hawthorne. There are ripples of dissent in Four Paths, and Harper seizes an opportunity to take down the Hawthornes and change her destiny-to what extent, even she doesn't yet know.
 
The Gray is growing stronger every day, and its victims are piling up. When Violet accidentally unleashes the monster, all three must band together with the other Founders to unearth the dark truths behind their families' abilities... before the Gray devours them all.

      YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

Definitely the novel. Titles are tough for me, and THE DEVOURING GRAY was no exception. The first few drafts had a more tongue-in-cheek title that was always intended as a bit of a placeholder, but I couldn’t think of something better until fall of 2016, when my best friend and brilliant critique partner Amanda Foody suggested THE DEVOURING GRAY. Needless to say, it stuck.

 

      YABC:  What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

It’s tough to choose just one, because I’m proud of the whole book, but I think that Violet’s scene in the climax is probably the answer. It was so difficult for me to get those emotions right, especially since they’re really personal to me, but I love how it turned out. I can’t say much more because of spoilers, but I hope readers love it too!

      

YABC:  Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

It’s so important to find critique partners who you work well with! My CPs taught me how to take feedback and implement an edit letter before I ever had an agent or an editor--they made me so much better at my job.

      

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?

Believe it or not, this is the short list: WILDER GIRLS by Rory Power, WICKED SAINTS by Emily A. Duncan, KINGSBANE by Claire Legrand, KING OF FOOLS by Amanda Foody, WICKED FOX by Kat Cho, THE TIGER AT MIDNIGHT by Swati Teerdhala, THERE WILL COME A DARKNESS by Katy Rose Pool, DESCENDANT OF THE CRANE by Joan He, and so many more. It’s going to be an awesome year for YA readers.

      

YABC:  What’s up next for you?

Currently, I’m working on THE DEVOURING GRAY’s sequel, which is slated for Spring 2020. It’s an intense book that’s been challenging but rewarding to work on.

     

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

Harper gave me the most trouble in THE DEVOURING GRAY. I think that’s why I love her so much--I have a soft spot for difficult characters who take ages to get right.

  

   YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

I enjoy whatever part of the writing process I am not currently working on. When I’m revising, I miss drafting, and vice versa.

    

 YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

I read really fast. Does that count? :)

    

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

A few years ago, I stumbled upon a YouTube channel of a woman who has dedicated her entire life to rescuing orphaned neonatal (too young to be separated from their mothers) kittens and educating others about how to help save their lives. Her name is Hannah Shaw, and her projects, Kitten Lady and Orphan Kitten Club, are absolutely incredible. The two best ways for communities to help neonatal kittens are to try and TNR (trap-neuter-return) stray cat colonies, and to foster baby kittens outside shelters using volunteers or create a special shelter wing called a kitten nursery until they’re old enough to be adopted out. Hannah runs workshops for all of these potential solutions, and has single-handedly raised tons of awareness for this issue across the United States. All while fostering kittens of her own and finding them loving homes!

Even if you’re not a cat lover or an animal person, it’s impossible not to admire her dedication to her cause.
