Meet A Curse So Dark and Lonely!!

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

YABC:  What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

I love the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, and I've always wanted to do my own take on it. I love the idea of discovering the true person beneath what we all show the world. You'll see once you start reading that it veers away from the traditional fairy tale, so I try to tell people that it's not a true retelling. It's really more inspired by Beauty and the Beast. I've seen a few people say it's like a cross between Beauty and the Beast and Game of Thrones, but appropriate for teens, and I think that's an accurate comparison.

YABC:  Who is your favorite character in the book?

This is SUCH a hard question. I love Harper for her fierce tenacity. I love Rhen for his determination and his hidden kindness and patience. I love Grey for his steadfast loyalty. Can I love all three?

YABC:  Which came first, the title or the novel?

The book! My agent came up with the title when we were about 50 pages into it, because she thought we might be able to sell on proposal (and we did).

YABC:  What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

I absolutely love the scene in the inn, when the soldiers from Syhl Shallow show up, and Harper saves the day.

YABC:   Thinking way back to the beginning, what’s the most important thing you've learned as a writer from then to now?

What a great question! Probably that the need to "hustle" never ends. Being an author isn't easy. You're a creator, for sure, but you're also in the public eye. There's definitely pressure to have a brand right from the beginning.

YABC:  What do you like most about the cover of the book?

I love it all. Shane Rebenscheid and the team at Bloomsbury did an incredible job. If I had to choose ONE detail, it would probably be the font.

YABC:  What new release book are you looking most forward to in 2019?

I have THE WICKED KING sitting on my kindle as a reward for finishing my current round of revisions. I can't wait to start reading.

YABC:  What was your favorite book in 2018?

Probably THE CRUEL PRINCE.

YABC:   What’s up next for you?

I have CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT, my next YA contemporary, coming out in June 2019. I very loosely call it "Robin Hood set in high school." My next fantasy, a sequel to CURSE, will be out January 2020. The title is A HEART SO FIERCE AND BROKEN.

YABC:  Is there anything that you would like to add?

Nope.

YABC:  Which was the most difficult or emotional scene to narrate?

There's a scene between Grey and Rhen on the castle parapets, and I was sobbing when I wrote it.

YABC:  Which character gave you the most trouble when writing your latest book?

GREY. OMG. GREY. YOU DEVIL. (He's a POV character in A HEART SO FIERCE AND BROKEN.)

YABC:  Which part of the writing process do you enjoy more: Drafting or Revising?

Revising, for sure!

YABC:  What would you say is your superpower?

Being a Mom. I can mom so hardcore.

YABC:  Is there an organization or cause that is close to your heart?

The Preeclampsia Foundation. All three of my boys were preemies due to preeclampsia.
