Author Chat with Melissa de la Cruz, Plus Giveaway!

Today we're excited to chat with Melissa de la Cruz, author of Alex & Eliza. Read on for more about Melissa and her novel, plus a giveaway!

1. What gave you the inspiration to write this book?

Melissa: After seeing Hamilton in New York, my daughter was obsessed with Eliza Schuyler, and so her interest in it piqued my interest in their love story.

2. Who is your favorite character in the book?

Melissa: Eliza. She’s my homage to Lizzy Bennet and Jo March.

3. Which came first, the title or the novel?

Melissa: Titles always come first with me.

4. What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?

Melissa: I love the opening and especially when Alex and Eliza are dancing and she steps on his foot, they’re so funny together.

6. What do you like most about the cover of the book?

Melissa: I love everything about it, from the rose gold to the silhouettes. It’s really striking, your eye goes right to it in the book store.

7. What upcoming release book are you looking most forward to?
Melissa: I was really excited for Laini Taylor’s Strange the Dreamer which just came out.

I can’t wait to read it!

8. What was your favorite book in 2016?

Melissa: Oh there are so many, but When Breath Becomes Air was just so incredibly beautiful. A really really important book, we are so lucky he wrote it.

9. What’s up next for you?

Melissa: RISE OF THE ISLE OF THE LOST is out May 23! So excited for this new Descendants adventure!

10. Is there anything that you would like to add?

Melissa: I’ve noticed a few reviewers complaining that Alexander Hamilton would never have been a lovestruck fool, but the story where he forgot the password to the fort after spending an evening with Eliza is real. It’s documented in history, and it’s one of my favorite stories about him. Because he was a lovestruck fool, a total romantic. I love that detail. He wasn’t just a founding father, he was also a young and handsome man who fell head over heels in love. I would not have written the book if he wasn’t so romantic.

Meet Melissa de la Cruz!

Melissa de la Cruz is the #1 New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times and Publishers Weekly internationally bestselling author of many critically acclaimed novels, including The Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel and the Summer on East End series. Her Blue Bloods series has sold over three million copies, and the Witches of East End series became an hour-long television drama on the Lifetime network.

Meet Alex & Eliza!

1777. Albany, New York.

As battle cries of the American Revolution echo in the distance, servants flutter about preparing for one of New York society’s biggest events: the Schuylers’ grand ball. Descended from two of the oldest and most distinguished bloodlines in New York, the Schuylers are proud to be one of their fledgling country’s founding families, and even prouder still of their three daughters—Angelica, with her razor-sharp wit; Peggy, with her dazzling looks; and Eliza, whose

beauty and charm rival those of both her sisters, though she’d rather be aiding the colonists’ cause than dressing up for some silly ball.

Still, Eliza can barely contain her excitement when she hears of the arrival of one Alexander Hamilton, a mysterious, rakish young colonel and General George Washington’s right-hand man. Though Alex has arrived as the bearer of bad news for the Schuylers, he can’t believe his luck—as an orphan, and a bastard one at that—to be in such esteemed company. And when Alex and Eliza meet that fateful night, so begins an epic love story that would forever change the course of American history.

In the pages of Alex and Eliza, #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz brings to life the romance of young Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.

The cover design is nice, although I hear that it's questionable whether Hamilton ever liked women. The synopsis is excellent in that it establishes that the book is, in fact, about Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler.

This book sounds more than interesting for the fact this is something reflecting on a real event in history! The cover is plain but it seems to work for this book. I've heard so much about this story but I feel like reading the book might help me understand the real story between Alex & Eliza because understanding history in any case, shape or size is always important in my opinion.

I adore the cover! It reminds me of those old silhouettes people used to pose for. My daughter's name is Eliza, so this instantly went on my wishlist.

The summary is cute, and I like that it's based on historical figures.

I adore period stories and historical fiction. I haven't drunk the Hamilton Kool-Aid like the rest of the world, but I'm still looking forward to the story.
